I-Shift is Volvo Trucks’ range of automated gearboxes that are designed to make driving easier, safer and more comfortable. Every gear change is perfectly timed – automatically – and the latest generation offers faster and smoother shifts than ever. A range of software packages lets you tailor the I-Shift for your needs. There are features available for the I-Shift that enable one pedal driving in certain situations. And depending on the truck model, there are versions of the I-Shift that open up new possibilities, like the I-Shift with crawler gears and the I-Shift Dual Clutch.

How does the I-Shift work?

The I-Shift is based on a ”classic” unsynchronised manual gearbox – hence its compact design and high efficiency. The magic happens in the electronic control unit, which manages the clutch and shifts. By constantly evaluating information about speed, weight, road grade and torque demand, it applies extreme precision to every shift. The system also communicates with the engine, allowing it to adjust the revs and brakes for best performance.

I-Shift is available for Volvo FH , Volvo FH16, Volvo FM, Volvo FMX and Volvo FE.

I-Shift with crawler gears – start wherever

Are you pulling heavy loads? Is starting from a standstill an issue in hilly terrain or poor road conditions? Equip your truck with I-Shift with crawler gears and leave this worry far behind. Startability is improved, and the strain on your clutch is reduced by up to 75%. Choose between one or two crawler gears, plus the additional option of extra reverse gears. The gear ratio allows you to drive as slowly as 0.5–2 km/h with total control over your engine torque.

Crawl slow, run lean

With the I-Shift with crawler gears, you don’t have to compromise on either fuel economy or startability. You can have both. Just choose a faster rear axle ratio, which allows you to maintain cruising speed at much lower revs when you’re driving on decent roads. It’s more comfortable and better for your fuel efficiency.

I-Shift Dual Clutch – a new way to drive

Do your assignments demand high performance and frequent gear changes? Then go for the I-Shift Dual Clutch – it offers really smooth, acceleration with seamless shifting. It changes gear in a fraction of a second.


You’ll get a steady flow of power that can transform the way you drive – and boost your productivity. The torque is constant, so you can confidently change gear in the middle of a bend. The seamless power also keeps the load steady. The power is transferred continually to the wheels, meaning there’s a minimal risk of getting stuck or losing your grip in slippery conditions. Even when engine-braking downhill with downshifting, you can be sure of a firm grip and safer ride.


A constant flow of power

The I-Shift Dual Clutch can pre-select the next gear while driving in the current one. One clutch is idling while the other is engaged. Thanks to two input shafts and an ingenious arrangement of gearwheels and selecting elements, two gears can then be selected at the same time. The result? Seamless gear changes in a fraction of a second – without interrupting power delivery.


I-Shift Dual Clutch is available for Volvo FH, Volvo FM and Volvo FMX.

Terrain Brake with one pedal drive

If you drive in tough terrain at low speeds and need precise control over both engine torque and braking power, the Terrain Brake is a useful option. It gives your truck one pedal drive functionality by letting you control both the engine throttle and the wheel brakes using only the accelerator. It helps you stop and position your truck with a wheel on top of a rock or another obstacle without slipping off. The Terrain Brake is available for Volvo FH16 and Volvo FMX, and it’s active up to 4 km/h.

Change Direction with one pedal drive

When manoeuvring and shifting between forward and reverse frequently, the Change Direction feature for I-Shift will become your best friend. It lets you drive forward, shift to reverse, and control the braking power with the accelerator without using the brake pedal. Of course, it works the other way around too when shifting from reverse to forward driving. This feature is active in speeds up to 20 km/h.

Active Grip Control in all conditions

I-Shift offers an advanced traction system that improves traction and startability performance on road as well as off road. This is made possible by quickly adjusting the engine torque to reduce wheel spin. The system works for both differential locked rear axles as non-differential locked rear axles.
